What Qualifications are Needed?
While there isn’t a specific qualification required to set up a care company, experience in healthcare or social care is beneficial.

For CQC registration (registered manager), we highly recommend having a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management in Adult Care, or a degree in Nursing. Experience, good communication skills, and strong organisational capabilities are also valuable.

Regulatory Approvals
Registration with CQC and Ofsted
In the UK, care agencies providing personal care must be registered with the CQC. Educational and childcare services must register with Ofsted. This involves meeting specific standards of care and passing inspections. You need to demonstrate that you meet CQC’s 5 Key Questions standards (safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led) and comply with Ofsted’s rigorous requirements.
Fit & Proper Person Requirement
Both CQC and Ofsted require that the person applying to run a care service must be a ‘fit and proper person,’ meaning they have the appropriate skills, qualifications, and experience to provide the service. This typically includes a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
